February 24th

We are almost done, Gang!  Tuesday is our last day.  If you didn't read your essay aloud, plan to do that and to encourage your tutee to do the same.  We will collect their typed copies for inclusion in the book.  Your journals need to be completed (outside and inside) for class.  In this blog, what have you gained from this experience as a tutor?  As a student?

Marie and I both read our essays out loud today. Our tutee has hers done, and I'm very impressed with it. We worked on our journal collages for most of the time today which was fun. Our tutee was kind of down at first, but I think we cheered her up a little bit at least. I feel like what i gained in this experience is the good feeling that comes with helping someone. I honestly don't think it helped me as a student, but if I ever tutor someone I'll be prepared.

I hope you all had a great experience tutoring. Maybe you have enjoyed some of the same great experiences I've had. There's something awesome about watching someone realize what they need to do to make their paper better, or seeing them understand a new concept for the first time.

Our student Julius showed up for class today, but unfortunately he didn't come with any of his stuff. He says he has a rough draft ready and will convert it into a final draft for Tuesday. Ashley and I shared our essays with him today, and talked to him a little about his. As a tutor, this experience has taught me patience and to disregard first impressions for the most part. As a student this experience has taught me to be open to new learning experiences. This experience has also taught me that the more over whelming and challenging that an assignment is, the more pride I'm going to feel with the final outcome.

Kristin and I offered to read our essays aloud, however, our tutee asked if he could just read them. I've learned that when you are a tutor you have to realize that teaching takes a lot of patience, and that just because you give someone a deadline doesn't mean they will follow it. The second part isn't that big of a shock, but I've been in a role reversal since its the deadlines I've been giving haven't really been met, for instance my tutee accidentally forgot his rough draft so we couldn't really work on anything. However, we were promised that the final draft would be ready on Tuesday, I really hope it is or I'll be extremely disappointed! As a student throughout this process I've noticed that I am really glad to have three more years of learning before entering the field of teaching because it's extremely difficult! Also, the wonderful trick of reading my paper backwards to edit it is a trick I'll add to my normal writing process.

Our tutee was not at school today, so we worked on our journal collages the entire session. I plan to read my essay aloud on Tuesday. As a tutor, I have gained a respect for helping students from all walks of life. Our tutee is a very talented writer, and I hope he continues to use this talent he has been given. My experience has been a rewarding one, and I hope to continue to remain on this "high" in the coming days. As a student, I have learned ways to make my essays and papers for upcoming classes better.

I have not read my essay aloud yet, but I plan to do so Tuesday. My tutee showed up with most of his rough draft finished. We helped him complete the rest of it, and then we looked over what he needed and wanted to change. He told us that he will email his final draft to us to look over, but I haven’t received his email yet. I feel that what I have gained from this experience is being able to help someone without doing everything for them. I encouraged my tutee to become independent and not rely heavily on us to correct his creativeness. What I learned as a student is when I look at my paper, I need to look at the bigger picture instead of the small details. Overall this experience was very satisfying, and I feel that I accomplished something really good.

I have really enjoyed this writing project. It has given me the opportunity to be on the other side of the writing process. Throughout the project I learned a lot of my strengths and weaknesses. As a tutor I have learned to read the students reactions and overall comfort zone. When my tutee appeared to be uncomfortable, I shared some of my writing experiences. As a student I verified the importance of attending class and putting forth effort.

I am surprised by what I've learned. I learned that tutoring is not all that difficult. Granted, I haven't had what I expect is the ultimate tutoring challenge: someone who doesn't want to write something. But, what I have taken from my time with Ben and John is that shared criticism and commiseration is about as natural as tutoring gets. John has been a great tutee and I only hope I've been as equally "tutiful". John isn't one for reading aloud, which is sad, since I am such a polar opposite, but expected from a high school age boy. So we passed our essays in a circle, a carousel of ha-ha's and mmm's. Good writing all around.
As a student, I've learned not to judge the finished product by the rough draft. At least, not any more than necessary. John's essay was remarkable easy to read in many places. He had good rhythm and pace in more than half of the essay. I know it sounds somewhat cliche but, I judged the book by the cover and was proven wrong.

John had his rough draft completed, and it was some good stuff. We made a plan and outlined some corrections for him to make over the weekend. During this experience, I got to watch someone go from skeptical to having a good time in just a few days. As nice as it was to see John come out of his shell, it was even nicer to see someone enjoy writing. I've learned a lot from this experience, and I hope John has too.

I hope your experience tutoring was everything you expected and didn't expect at the same time. For myself, I always try to keep on my toes and ready to see where the next line brings us.

Over this whole experience I have gained a lot especially in the area of patience. I have always struggled with patience and working with our tutee I feel as though this really has helped me mature in that area. Also, our tutee has taught Courtney and I not to judge a book by its cover. Getting to meet and really understand our tutee really benefited us as well as him. It helped us to be more comfortable and to understand his mind set to better help him with his creative writing process. It helped him because he felt that he could be more open with us and not be scared of what we may think of him. Overall spending the time getting to know him paid off very well and made our working relationship a lot more successful.
