February 22

Today, you worked on roughdrafts again and created your collage on your journals.  What was most effective in your conversation about your tutee's roughdraft?  What kind of response did you receive?  What should you have done differently? Respond in at least 10-12 sentences.

Most effected was that Britt was certain at what she wanted to do in the future. Britt had a good flow on her topic which was fantastic!
The response I got I felt was kind of like Britt had a relief that she was almost done. Like she was thankful that this project was going to be over soon.
I definetly would have talked more. I am sooooo thankful that I got a partner that had really good notions. Alene had tons of great ideas on which I agreed on. I did have ideas and did share them but got kinda one of those "okay" responses. Do not get me wrong, I am glad Alene and I got a student who was actually into this project but, I do feel like I didn't really describe my theories well. That is all for now. All in all this project was very interesting and fun.

Unfortunately our student was sick today. However, we'd had the opportunity to go over his roughdraft last time he was here. We talked about his general global issues and suggested some different routes he might take to correct them. The response we recieved was very positive, he liked quite a few of the ideas and said he would put them to work in his essay. We perhaps should have focused on his local errors a bit more, but he seemed to be able to spot those pretty well on his own. I can't wait to see his final draft on Thursday, if he is there (fingers crossed :) )

Unfortunatly Julius was sick again and not able to attend class on Tuesday. I'm very concerned at this point in our ability to finish the project on time. I have not gotten to see his rough draft yet, but am looking forward to hopefully seeing it tomorrow. He's such a nice kid, and had a great idea for his essay. I would hate for him to not have an essay to contribute at the end of our project. Hopefully tomorrow is a very productive day.

What my tutee seemed to respond to most was a little reassurance. He tentatively walked me through his introduction and body paragraphs. Each time I complimented him, pointing out transitions that were well conceived and strong support for his belief, he grew a little more confident. He wanted an outside source to, "tell him he was making sense".
I severely underestimated the ease of tutoring. It's gratifying to watch my tutee progressing in a direction that makes him, at least relatively, excited. But, it is only so gratifying because progress is a hard commodity to come by. At times there is nothing that will switch on the light bulb above his head. I worry that his interest might stagnate if he can't progress his thoughts. To this end, I wish I could coerce him write more down. He insists that he is a "dive in" paper writer. And for such a short project, I hate to judgmental of his writing style. It seems like I'm flirting with a fine line, enough work to stimulate his rhetoric, but not so much that he finds this all redundant and stops putting forth effort. Here's hoping.

Working on the collage for our journals was relaxing. I have not done that since high school. Our tutee's roughdraft was outstanding. He has a phenomenal vocabulary, and he knew from the beginning what he would write about. The most effective tip we gave him was to make the essay something he is passionate about. He pretty much knew from there what he would write. We asked if he had a personal experience he could tie into his paper, and he added it to his essay immediately. He is a very talented writer. He is finished with his final draft at this point. I am sad that Thursday will be our last session.

Me and Sarah had a chance to look over Britt's great roughdraft. She is a bright young girl with great ideas. I will admit however, that I focused more on the roughdraft rather than the collage. I find it difficult at times to refrain from influencing her writing process. I hope I have not been overwhelming my tutee and my partner. I sometimes feel the effect of running out of time and meetings. However, I do believe she responded well to some of our ideas. If I had to do it all over again I would be more prepared for her small issues with writing.

Today, it was my just me and our tutee, since shelby went to OKC to do some ambassador work. We looked at the changes she made on her rough draft. Reading through it, I noticed that although we talked about the fact that she was missing a thesis statement in her intro, she still hadn't fixed that yet. So we both created possible thesis statements, I am interested which one she decided on. We also tried to look at some grammar problems, but since I am not the most comfortable with that, we ask others for help. We kinda ran out of time to start making our collage, but i hope we will have time to catch to the others on thursday.

My tutee was sick today so my partner and I talked about how we could refine his essay when we get to see him on thursday. We worked on our collages and talked mostly about our tutee! We miss you tutee!

Well, I was unable to discuss with my student over his rough draft today. He forgot his paper at home. I did the best I could giving him general advice such as, read the paper aloud to understand how it sounds. Many times this will present errors one did not see before. truthfully I feel a little behind. With all the setbacks of getting a new kid, snow days, sick days, and not bringing everything to class I have yet to read any of my students work. I am very hopeful for Thursday and the opportunity to finally do some reading.

Well, Courtney and I's tutee threw us a curve ball by not having his rough draft finished today. It was a little bit frustrating because we continue to have to pull him along, all while trying to not be to pushy! He did really well today by finishing his rough draft soon after he got his creative juices flowing. Our tutee is very smart but sometimes lacks motivation which can be a brick wall sometimes. We reassured him that we werent frustrated with him, but that the final was due Tuesday. He was a little worried about how it would turn out because we would not be able to look over the final draft. Overall though our tutee seemed confident. I think Courtney and I could have been a little more persistent with reminding him and pushing him towards the final outcome. Its difficult though because if we pushed to much he would mentally check out but when we didnt push enough he tended to not work as well. We are discovering a good middle ground and pace that our tutee likes as well. I am still very confident in our tutee and his writings as well!
