Day 2

Today as I was "creeping" around groups, I heard fantastic dialogue about the writing process.  Discuss your experience of the day.  What approaches did you take?  Is there anything that you would have done differently?  What was your closing assignment for your student?

Today was so dissapointing because our student Julius was absent. I was looking forward to seeing what he had decided to write about and helping him get started on his essay. Hopefully we will be able to make up for lost time on Thursday.

In my group we looked at all of Ellis's different beliefs, and he picked the one he wanted to write about. Then we worked on his thesis statement, which was really good. Afterwards we brainstormed about what story he wanted to write his paper about. I wouldn't have done anything differently; it was a very productive day. We asked Ellis to start on his rough draft and hopefully have it finished by Thursday.

Today I did not have very good dialogue with my student. I am a typically quiet girl but was trying my best to get him to share his ideas with me and he was very vague. I would ask him a question and he would sit there and not respond for several minutes. I tried to break the silence but he acted as if I was messing up his train of thought by doing so. I then told him to free write because discussion was not working. He wrote about a paragraph and to my surprise his writing was very very good! I told him to add onto his writing for Thursday and that I would help him with any questions he had then. Although he is not very expressive through words.. he is through writing so I am looking forward to reading his draft.

Our girl knew right away what she wanted to talk about. I'm excited to see her rough draft, and as Marie said, we're planning to steer her towards a positive outcome with her topic. I think we got really lucky with the girl in our group! She's very open, and I don't think she'll have any problem writing her essay.

We started out by establishing the belief that Curtis wanted to write about, and then fleshing it out into a thesis statement via freewriting; he also came up with both his introduction and his conclusion paragraph. I can't wait to see his rough draft on Thursday!

The second day was the first day for Daniel and myself to act as a group in speaking with John, who is our "client". I could definitely tell that having Daniel's input was helping the situation, and John seemed to open up a lot more. Of course, a lot of this has to do with John seeming to have given the assignment a good deal of thought. He not only knew what he wanted to write about, but also had a basic plan for how he was going to support his thesis. We quickly went over the requirements for the essay, making sure to tell him to think of it only as a guideline to help him structure his essay. John seemed confident that he would be able to get a rough draft -or at least an outline- by Thursday. I for one am excited to see what he has produced.

I felt like today was very productive discussing Ellis's thesis statement! We discussed a few of his ideas and beliefs and wrote them down so we could remember them if forgotten. We made a web graph so we could brainstorm ideas to make the writing process easier for him. It was awesome to dive deeper into what Ellis appreciates and find out when truly makes him, him! He seems really excited about this project and really passionate to write about how he believes that "Time Changes Everything"

I was positively surprised about how well today went. I think we got really lucky with our new group member. I would say we connected quiet fast. When we started talking about her topic, I guess she kinda blew us away. Her personal story was really interesting, but after going home me and Shelby reviewed our session. I was a little worried that the main tone of the story might not turn out as positive as it was supposed to be. We outlined a brief idea on how to add a more positive note, if that will be necessary. This project might not be as bad after all.

Unfortunately, Julius wasn't there so instead I was able to do homework for other classes. I really hope that this is the only day he will miss or I'm afraid that we will get behind of schedule.

Our approaches were only with the free writing. We felt that he was very set on what he wanted to write about. So we just set him up with paper and a pen and let him go at it. He had very surprising introduction but a strong one at that. One thing that i would have changed is that we got off topic and didn't get as much as could have. the closing assignment that we gave to him was to have a distinct rough draft for the next meeting time.

In our session we tried to focus on gathering ideas. Since my tutee didn't have a topic yet we asked her about her goals. In discovering her interests she revealed she enjoyed learning languages. We prepared an outline as an example for her writing to follow along with. Towards the end of our meeting I assigned some self searching for her ideal topic, something she could be proud of.

Ah, breaking the ice! I'm interested to see how my tutee's writing turns out. We did chat about our preferred writing processes. John, my tutee, says that he likes to just dive in, outlines and bubble charts be damned. I'm optimistic because John actually looks like he's interested in the project. (And that is a relief)
But, the pessimist in me is poking me in the ribs. I didn't tell John that I thought I too was once a "diver". I didn't tell him how much better my writing became after I decided to start outlining. We decided that John would have a VERY rough draft done by our next meeting.
